These Vines are Out of Control!

With my blog, My So-Called Social Life, I want to delve into interesting articles and news that I find on various aspects of Social Media (or New New Media). With this blog, I hope to both inform and interest you on the newest developments in Social Media. But I also hope to touch on the importance and impact these tools have on our lives.

What's hot right now? What doesn't make any sense? This week, for my first post I am addressing, or maybe introducing, the little video maker that could: Vine. (Both extremely popular and very confusing for many people.)

Get familiar with vine: Vine is a mobile video app acquired and owned by Twitter.
Vine debuted on January 24, 2013 as a free iOS app on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The app is now available for Android devices as well. In just a couple of months, Vine became the most used video application on the market and by spring that same year, became the most-downloaded free app for iOS devices.

Now, I frequent the Huffington Post, a very popular news site. Recently, HuffPost has been running "The Best Vines of the Week" each week in the Technology section. This week, August 25-31, 2013,  we get a hilarious compilation of the week's 43 funniest and most shocking Vines. I promise it's not a waste of time!

So you've noticed, these videos are SHORT. Users are given six seconds per video, that they can start and stop anytime within the recording process, to create, essentially, pre-edited six-second videos taken with a user's smartphone. And you thought 140 character tweets were limited!

But why does it matter? Okay, I'll give you an example of just how much users are sharing in six seconds. This guy Vines (Yes, the act of recording a Vine) the break-up of his relationship! The short article that accompanies this Vine video forces us ask the question: Are we sharing too much? Is nothing private anymore? I have three words for you: FACEBOOK OVER SHARE. Maybe I'll discuss that can of worms in a future post.

So while physically there really is only so much you can share with each Vine video you create and post, this tool does allow a creative and interesting view into our lives and the lives of the other users we follow. From trick shots that seem unbelievable to strange feline behavior to creative sketches brought to life, Vines are the newest and possibly the strangest way thus far in which we express ourselves and share our lives with the internet. The internet is our So-Called Social Life.

  1. I heard of Vine just last week and was so interested about it, that I had to download it on my android phone. I knew it was a video app and that’s about it. My experience on Vine was good and I found some funny and interesting videos. These videos for me do not have enough substance to them and I soon lost interest. Do you think other people will to? Is this just a phase of another app? I think that Vine will hold its own for a while, but soon fade away.

  2. I did not know that Vine was a Twitter based and owned app/tool. If I’m being honest, though, I don’t understand the draw of a 6 second video. We can’t forget about the fact that YouTube is already too personal, but now people are sharing their break-ups and wasting their precious time so people can watch their significant others slap them in the head? No…just, no. However, just because it’s not everyone’s favorite (me!), it could easily be someone’s go-to form of social media. And with the link with Twitter—that’s growing more everyday—I don’t see and end in sight for Vine…unless your 6 seconds is up.

  3. I have never heard of the Vine app but of course, I am now interested in downloading it. This sounds a lot like snapchat, which I already use regularly. The fact that someone ended a relationship on Vine is a little disturbing, but not surprising one bit because realistically, this is exactly what our world of technology is coming to. I do, however, agree with your statement on Facebook over share. One of my ultimate pet peeves, people that air out their dirty laundry on Facebook. Now, I have definitely put one or two mini-rants on Facebook about random things but it is the people that constantly complain and discuss their daily dramas online and then say things like "if you don't like it, don't read it" that really get my blood boiling. Didn't their mothers ever tell them if they don't have anything nice to say, don't make obnoxious public statements? (I know that is not the EXACT saying, but it seems more applicable these days).

  4. It is official – I have learned something new about social media. Vines? Really? Well why not I guess. I have to agree with you that this can easily become just like some people on Facebook – OVER SHARE. While I haven’t signed up for Vine yet, I’m sure it is wildly interesting. Then again, I don’t think I will sign up for this one. Who has the time for all these little communicating worlds? Oh who am I kidding? I said the same thing long ago about Facebook and I do have that account.
Does anyone go outside and play with their kids anymore? Do people have gardens or go for walks without any electronic gadgets to “capture and post” the status of their BMI or whatever else these apps let us do? I am not against such electronic genius, I just hope people have common sense to shut it off every once and a while. It’s astonishing to think that according to Statista.com , the cumulative number of apps downloaded from the Apple App Store from June 2008 to May 2013 was in the 50 billion range. That’s a lot of downloading! I am one of these people also so I can’t say I think it’s all bad, but we need to have “real” experiences in life also. That’s all I’m saying.

  5. Even though I do not vine...yet! I found this blog to be very interesting. I have seen some vines, and the app seems to be really cool! Vine does seem that it is starting to become really popular, and it could start to be put into that same category with Facebook and Twitter over time. As of right now, I do not think i will get a vine account. I am really not interested in making 6 second videos.

  6. I do not have vine either yet but wow! I did not know that vine was owned by Twitter I also had no idea it was the fastest growing app for video sharing! I have seen many Vine's some really interesting and others well I just do not get why some people would but that sort of thing out there for everyone to see. Your blog I think just inspired me to finally download the app though. :) Excited to read your future posts.
